Addressing 5 Challenges in AI Implementation within Indonesian Dentistry

02 September 2025
Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to revolutionize dental practice, offering advancements from enhanced diagnostic accuracy and efficient treatment planning to optimized clinic operations. Global trends indicate a growing adoption of AI in the healthcare sector, and dentistry is significantly impacted by this wave.

However, Indonesia’s transition to an AI-powered dental era comes with its unique set of challenges. Dental professionals and practitioners face various obstacles related to equipment and skill development, as AI adoption necessitates robust infrastructure and human resource capabilities.

High initial investment costs
The initial investment required for AI implementation often presents a significant hurdle for dental clinics. Advanced AI systems, in particular, demand high-specification hardware for processing medical imaging data, along with the latest compatible digital imaging systems. Furthermore, licensing innovative AI software may add to the financial burden.

Internet connectivity and stability issues
Internet connectivity plays a vital role in AI implementation. Many AI solutions, especially those cloud-based or requiring access to large databases for learning, heavily rely on fast and stable internet connections. The network instability prevalent in Indonesia can lead to significant delays in diagnosis or treatment planning, thereby affecting the quality of service.

System compatibility and integration complexities
Compatibility and system integration also pose significant challenges. Integrating new AI systems with existing practice management software or digital diagnostic equipment in clinics requires complex technical adjustments and additional costs. The lack of data standardization within the Indonesian healthcare sector exacerbates this problem, complicating the synchronization process for electronic medical records, radiographic images, and 3D models.

Limited local technical support and maintenance
The availability of adequate local technical support and maintenance for AI systems remains limited. The implementation and troubleshooting of AI software and hardware demand specialized expertise that is not yet uniformly distributed across Indonesia. This can result in detrimental downtime, disrupting clinic operations, and eroding trust in the technology.

Gaps in dentist competency and training
Mastering AI is not solely about possessing the technology; it also hinges on individual competency. Many dentists may lack a fundamental understanding of AI’s operational mechanisms, data analysis capabilities, or accurate interpretation of AI system results. This underscores the critical need for continuous training, as current dental education curricula in Indonesia may not yet fully integrate comprehensive modules on AI and digital dentistry.

Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes enhancing education and training through professional associations (such as the Indonesian Dental Association – PDGI), universities, and technology providers to build digital literacy and AI skills. Investment incentives, such as financing schemes or subsidies, are crucial to facilitate technology adoption. Collaboration between industry and academia is vital to foster the development of more affordable local AI solutions tailored to the specific needs of Indonesian practices.

To gain further insights on overcoming these AI implementation challenges and ensuring your practice remains relevant in the digital era, don’t miss attending the Indonesia Dental Exhibition and Conference (IDEC) 2025. This premier dental exhibition and conference in Indonesia will be held from November 14-16, 2025, at the Jakarta Convention Center, bringing together dentists, business owners, and distributors with manufacturers of the latest equipment and products that support dental clinic operations, while also facilitating professional networking.
